Technology is not the answer to everything

With technology moving at the pace it is today there seems to be more and more ways to cut corners and claim to be an expert in just about everything. But there’s one thing you can’t beat and you can’t fake – and that’s experience.

In the video production industry, experience counts for everything. Knowing how to cover a shot for the editor, with the enough cutaways and angles. Knowing how to coach actors and presenters to deliver a first class, believable performance. Knowing how to get the best out of your crew, to write a script that delivers the client the right results and to see the entire job through professionally, to a successful conclusion. It all takes experience.

Anyone can buy a camera and run off a bit of footage.

They can download some editing software and go to town with special effects – but if you want something that sells, something that trains your people, something that prevents accidents, something that inducts new staff in your company ways or something that represents your company to new clients and prospects – then you want experience.

In my company, Major Drama, we never cut corners and even though our prices have remained pretty much static for the last five years, we now find that clients are starting to want more for less. It’s because they have been offered cheaper services. When we quote on a job we quote on professional and experienced camera crew, editor, writer, director, actors, presenters etc. Through every step of the way we are professional and rely on the professional contribution of each of our team member’s vast experience.

Avoid the pitfalls

With video playing such an important role in training, marketing, presentation and image these days, it is amazing that companies are more and more willing to skimp on production with back-yarders offering all inclusive prices for an I-can-do-everything quote.

On numerous occasions I have been called on to ‘fix-up’ these blunders and it usually calls for a back-to-basics starting with script. We then try and salvage what footage we can and then turn it over to our professional editing department. It’s always such a shame because it means that the client ends up spending more money than what a professional job from Major Drama would have cost at the outset..

If you’re thinking about some web content, youtube advertising, training, induction, OHS, corporate or marketing videos – please consult true video production professionals and make sure that you end up with a great result and something which will stand you in good stead for many years to come.
